Welcome to our beautiful Shenandoah Valley and all that it has to offer! Located between the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains you will find famous caverns, historic civil war sites, local arts and crafts, markets, museums and resorts. With access to Interstates 81 and 64, The Shenandoah Valley is located approximately 100 miles north of Roanoke, 100 miles west of Richmond and 125 miles southwest of Washington D.C.

The county was formed in 1778 and named after the Marquis of Rockingham, a British statesman who was sympathetic with the American Revolution. Primarily Germans and Scotch-Irish settled in the Valley and made this area their home. By the mid-1880's, many changes and improvements to the County had been made. Railroads, roads and bridges offered much to the people of these newly-formed towns. These towns are what we know today as the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Rockingham County is the third largest County in Virginia covering five election districts and seven incorporated towns.

In 1737, the City of Harrisonburg was settled and named after the city's first family, the Harrisons. In 1780, after Thomas Harrison deeded two and one-half acres of his plantation to the county for a courthouse, the House of Delegates recognized the town as Harrisonburg. Businesses quickly began to spring up everywhere within this new town. Many years after the Civil War had passed through, Harrisonburg was finally incorporated as an independent city in 1916 with a population of about 5,500. It is now the 14th largest city in Virginia.
